Is Tooth Sensitivity Normal After Veneers? What to Know

When it comes to fixing chips, cracks, stains, and minor gaps all at once, veneers are a popular choice. They enhance the look of your smile and even last for decades with proper care. However, it’s common to feel some temporary tooth sensitivity after your treatment. Continue reading to learn why this happens and what you can do about it.

Why is Sensitive Teeth Expected After Veneers?

Your enamel is a vital part of protecting your teeth. This hard layer protects the sensitive dentin underneath, which has tiny channels in it that lead down to the tooth’s nerve. When it’s exposed, you may feel an increased sensitivity to hot or cold items.

In order to place veneers, your dentist will have to prepare your teeth. They do this by removing a small amount of your enamel. This step helps ensure that the thin porcelain shells will lie flush with your smile. Without doing this, the cosmetic may look big or feel bulky in your mouth.

The good news is that veneers will act like your enamel. It becomes the shield for the inner dentin. While your teeth are getting adjusted to the veneers (both the temporary and permanent sets), some sensitivity is normal and should go away relatively quickly.

Does It Happen with Lumineers?

Another treatment that is similar to veneers is Lumineers. These are also shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth, but they require little to no tooth preparation. They are much thinner and let you get back to your natural smile if you choose to.

Lumineers may not last as long as veneers, but you can enjoy a fixed smile for years to come. Some people may experience temporary sensitivity while others may not. It just depends on your individual case.

How Can You Make the Process More Comfortable?

You might be pleased to hear that the sensitivity is typically manageable and short-lived. While you are getting used to your veneers, here are some tips to make it easier:

  • Use Desensitizing Toothpaste: These have ingredients in them that help you with your sensitivity, letting you find relief.
  • Take Over-the-Counter Medication: Sometimes all it takes is some pain relievers to lessen your discomfort. Be sure to follow the instructions listed on the bottle.
  • Avoid Certain Foods: Items that are acidic, overly sweet, hot, or cold can irritate your teeth and cause discomfort. Try your best to avoid these while you are getting adjusted to your veneers. It won’t be long until you have a pain-free smile and can enjoy them once again!
