Dental implants boast an impressive success rate of more than 95%. As wonderful as that is, though, it does still leave the possibility of dental implant failure. If you ever believe something is wrong with one of your prosthetic teeth, contact our Blaine team right away. We will assess the situation and recommend your next steps. We want to save your restored smile and help you get back to enjoying all the benefits of implant-supported tooth replacement.

Why Do Dental Implants Fail?

The most common culprit behind dental implant failure is an infection known as peri-implantitis. It is a type of gum disease that occurs when harmful bacteria attack the tissue around an implant. Eventually, it can cause so much damage that the implant no longer has a secure base of support. Often, a lack of proper oral hygiene contributes to the development of peri-implantitis.

Other possible reasons for dental implant failure include:

  • Underlying medical conditions, such as certain types of cancer or uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Failure of the implant to bond with the surrounding tissue (failed osseointegration)
  • Chronic teeth grinding.
  • An injury to the face or jaw.

Symptoms of a Failed Dental Implant

Dental implant failure can occur at any time, whether it is soon after the initial placement surgery or much later down the road. You should always keep a close eye on your oral health and seek treatment if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • After you heal from your dental implant surgery, you should not be in any significant pain. Severe or prolonged discomfort is a red flag that deserves a professional assessment.
  • Difficulty chewing. After you get used to using your implants and their restorations, it should be easy to eat virtually any food. Challenges in this area can signal a major problem.
  • Signs of infection. Redness, swelling, gum recession, and pus could all indicate the presence of peri-implantitis.
  • An implant feels loose. This could be a problem with the implant itself or the restoration attached to it. In either case, you should see us for care.

How Dental Implant Salvage Works

Make an appointment with us as soon as you suspect something is wrong with one of your implants. The earlier you receive care, the more likely it is that we can address the situation via conservative and relatively inexpensive means.

When you arrive for your visit, we will take some X-rays, learn about your symptoms, and perform a visual examination. Then, we will develop a treatment plan. You might need something relatively simple, such as a new restoration or some antibiotics. If your case is severe, though, it might be necessary to completely remove the failing implant. After a recovery period and any necessary restorative care, you might be able to receive a new one.
